Kingman is the heart of historic Route 66, and boasts over 60 buildings on the National Historic Register, along with museums, murals, and monuments dedicated to the legendary road. Named after Lewis Kingman, an engineer for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the city sits 105 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, and 180 miles northwest of Phoenix.
Kingman’s origins trace back to the late 1800s when it served as a simple railroad siding near Beale Springs. Civil engineer Lewis Kingman supervised the construction of the railroad from Winslow to Beale Springs, utilizing a spring that Native Americans had used for centuries. The county seat shifted several times before permanently settling in Kingman in 1887. During World War II, Kingman played a crucial role as the site of a U.S. Army Air Force airfield.
Today, visitors can explore the Mohave Museum of History and Arts, which showcases the region’s past, or venture to Hualapai Mountain Park for outdoor adventures.
